RDTC do Samba! Saturday 26th March 2011

Written By Georgia Cosma

We started off the day early, Samba Steve set up his snare drums, Surdo drums, shakers, tambourims (noisier than you would think) & even a drum that made a sound rhino if rubbed with a wet cloth called a Cuica. After the drum & woodwind sections chose from the many instruments to hit & shake, samba Steve started us off on a song called Afro Blocko. We all quickly learned the rhythms & beats samba Steve demonstrated, and with everyone playing the catchy samba, it was hard not to shake your bum!

Steve taught us the signals the leader used like “putting on the hat” which means the beats coming to end, and putting 1,2 or 3 fingers up, which means come to the first break in the rhythm. He taught us catchy words to drum to, like sam-ba makes me feel-so –good! And you are a great big twit! Bring out the branston, bring out the branston was another one. We also played a few other songs including Clocks & Batucuda. Our own drummers then showed samba Steve one of our own tattoos, and he seemed pretty impressed!

The breaks in the song were usually pretty loud, as was the whole day, and by the end of it, there wasn’t a single person there without earplugs!

RDTC Drum and Wind Sections give a big “Thank You” to Samba Steve for this wonderful opportunity!

A DVD of the day is available to Buy!
