Sgt Tom Evans

Tom is Green and Gold throughout and has known and been part of the band for as long as he can remember. From a young age he was taken by his parents to see the band at every practice, performance and contest to support the band. Finally, in 1994 at the tender age of 6 Tom was allowed to follow in the footsteps of his sisters Kerrie and Kirsty. He started playing the Cornet but was used more as a mascot figure as he wore the smallest uniform ever made!

From joining the band at such a young age Tom has competed in many competitions which he always enjoys. He has also performed for the Royal Family during the VJ Day parade, Her Majesty the Queen’s visit to Romford and played in the grounds at Buckingham Palace. In 2008 Tom marched his 14th Lord Mayors Show. He also has travelled to France, Germany and the USA whilst in the ranks.

Sgt Mark Newman - PR Officer of the band

Mark joined the corps in February 2002, and is one of a handful of members that had a musical background prior to joining the band. He began music lessons through school at the age of 10 and progressed to pass Grade 5 on Trumpet when he was 13. Prior to joining the band, Mark was part of the Havering Music School Junior and Youth Brass Bands before eventually joining the band at the age of 15.

Mark began his unformed days on Cornet before transferring to a Tenor Horn in late 2002. He has competed in various competitions with the band both in the UK and overseas and holds the band’s triumph at the European Championships as his greatest contest memory.

He has travelled performed in France, Belgium, Germany and Gibraltar with the band. His best memory of all the overseas trips was in a High School Gymnasium in Chicago, USA. The corps played a Medley of American pieces, and the 1500 strong crowd of teenage Americans burst into chorus as the band played the “Star Spangled Banner”.

Mark has received the Best Newcomer, Band Person of the Year, Best Attendance and Band Personality of the Year awards at the bands Annual Presentation evenings during his time in uniform. He has gradually progresses through the ranks achieving his first stripe in 2004 and more recently being promoted to Sergeant in early 2008, when he also traded his Tenor Horn for a Trombone.

He is also on the Executive committee as a band representative and assists in the upkeep of the band website and quarterly magazine, and often prepares programmes for the band’s larger, self promoted shows as well as recruiting leaflets.

Mark is probably the sportiest band member and outside of band he can usually be found on a Football or Rugby pitch. He currently works in Ilford and is training to be a Chartered Accountant.

Sgt James Ainsworth - Band Librarian

James joined the band during the summer of 1999.  Like most members, he joined with no musical background and has built up his musical knowledge whilst in the ranks. James started banding life on a valved Trombone before progressing onto the slide version. He had a brief spell on the drums before returning back to Trombone where he has remained ever since. James’ lengthy spell on the Trombone now sees him head the section and on occasions deputises for Drum Major.

James has taken part in many contests whilst sporting the Green and Gold uniform. He was part of the two time National Championship and League winning band in 2003 and 2004, and the European championship winning band in 2006.  He has travelled to Germany 3 times to compete with the band, bringing back 4 Gold medals, 4 Silver Medals and 1 bronze.  James also travelled to Chicago in 2004 with the corps, and holds this as his favourite trip, closely followed by the bands tour to Gibraltar in 2007.
